If you're a Facebook user, you've probably noticed that Mark Zuckerberg's platform is changing its name. Now called the Meta, much has been said about this revolutionary promise of the Metaverse.
Learn more about this subject that will dominate the world wide web in the coming years:
The word Metaverse first appeared in the book Snow Crash, written by Neal Stephenson, in 1992 and became quite famous in the movie The Matrix and games like Second Life, Roblox, Minecraft and Fortnite. Since then, the concept has come a long way.
The latest high-tech bet is considered “the next chapter of the internet”, a 3D virtual world where you can shop, have fun, play games and even work. Bringing a new form to human communication, it is about the possibility of creating an alternative universe to the one we live in at the moment.During an interview with The Verge, the CEO describes that “instead of just viewing the content, you will be in it. And you will feel present with other people as if you were in other places, having different experiences that cannot be done in an app or on a website, like dancing, for example, or exercising”.
“The Metaverse is not just a virtual reality. It will be accessible in various forms of access, such as Virtual Reality glasses, cell phones, video game consoles and computers. And the technology won't be exclusively aimed at games or entertainment, but I'm sure it will be bigger. It will be a permanent process, a synchronous environment in which we can be together, and it seems to me that it will be a hybrid between social platforms that we see today, but in a corporeal environment for her”, he explains.
“This digital environment will bring tremendous opportunities for individual creators and artists; for people who want to work and own a home away from today's urban centers; and for people living in places where educational or recreational opportunities are more limited. This metaverse might be the next best thing to a functional teleportation device,” says Mark.
With an investment of 50 million pounds sterling, Facebook is hiring thousands of employees in the European Union to develop the technology. Many developers and companies like Nike and Microsoft are engaged in building this unique virtual world.
