Electric Kombi: new launch from VW
Finally, the new Electric Kombi was revealed and will soon be launched in Brazil as well.
After much anticipation, Volkswagen announced its latest version of the ID Buzz prototype that will give rise to the electric Kombi. Exactly 50 years after the German brand presented the first electric version of the van, which was developed based on the old model. The current model is completely different, with a project made from 0, totally thinking about electrification (which did not happen in the 70s).
There will be two fully electric versions with different applications: ID Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo. ID Buzz will be a Minibus for 5 people, with ample luggage space, already ID. Buzz will have 6 and 7 seats and is betting on the B2B (business to business) segment. At 4.71 meters in length, this will be the largest model based on the MEB modular platform, which also supports the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and ID.6 models. The new electric Kombi is 1,937 meters high and has a 2,988 wheelbase.
In addition to being a zero-carbon vehicle, the European models will be equipped with a 77 kWh battery, supplying current to a 150 kW (204 hp) electric motor, with rear-wheel drive (like the original Kombi). According to Volkswagen, the battery can be charged from 5 to 80% in 30 minutes.
During the presentation, Volkswagen executives said that the ID. Buzz brings the “60s feeling of freedom and free love.” The United States – especially California – is a major commercial target for the electric van.
"The ID. Buzz has a great deal of charm and brings the affinity with people back on the road," says Jozef Kaba, Head of Design at Volkswagen. The design team created a direct connection with the original classic vehicle: "In the Kombi T1 (first generation), you are practically sitting on top of the front axle as there is no front overhang. The ID. Buzz has incredibly short overhangs, ensuring everything important for security and technology.".
The VW ID Kombis. Buzz and ID. Buzz rely on a high percentage of recycled materials, such as the reuse of PET bottles instead of leather. The panel with a futuristic and minimalist look, has a 10-inch multimedia system, alongside an optional 12-inch. It also has a lever-shaped brand selector on the steering column. There will be 11 external colors available and 4 bicolor paintings.
The launch is scheduled for July in the European market and in 2023 in the United States. Apparently, the two versions of the electric Kombi should also come to Brazil.
