Supersonic travel is back!
If your bet is on more speed and sustainability, American Airlines has just bought 20 supersonic planes of the Overture model.
Considered the world's largest airline, American Airlines and Boom Supersonic announced on Tuesday an agreement to purchase up to 20 Overture airplanes- with the option to add 40 more. Designed to carry 65 to 80 passengers Mach 1.7 (2,100 km/h), twice the speed of today's fastest commercial aircraft..
The idea is that the trips emit less polluting gases and are more economical than its precursor, the Concorde (first supersonic plane for commercial purposes). Boom must meet operating requirements under the terms of the contract, such as industry standard performance and safety.
"Looking ahead, supersonic travel will be an important part of our ability to serve our customers," said Derek Kerr, American Airline's chief financial officer. "We are excited about how Boom will shape the future of travel for both our enterprise and our clients." Offering a range of 4,250 nautical miles (7,870), the manufacturer guarantees that the model will be able to fly more than 600 routes around the world in less than half the time. Flying from Miami to London in just under five hours and from Los Angeles to Honolulu in three hours is a dream come true.
“We are proud to share our vision of a more connected and sustainable world with American Airlines,” said Blake Scholl, founder and CEO of Boom. “We believe Overture can help American deepen its competitive advantage in network, loyalty and overall airline preference through the paradigm-shifting benefits of cutting travel times in half.”
In-seat entertainment screens, contactless technology and ample personal space are some of the details designed at Overture. The aircraft is expected to be the first commercial zero-carbon spacecraft optimized to run on 100% sustainable fuel.
Overture should be rolled out in 2025 and the first passengers should be airborne by 2029.
