The return of the golden age of Boxing
Originated in Mesopotamia, Boxing is a sport that has crossed generations and has become one of the most prestigious sports.
Since 3000 BC, the date of its emergence, the sport has transcended time and gained even more strength in the 17th and 19th centuries, especially in England. In Brazil, the success was no different! The sport began to be practiced at the beginning of the 20th century and, since then, the country has produced many internationally renowned boxers. Barns of great athletes, in Tupiniquim (brazilian indian) lands emerged Eder Jofre, three-time world champion and Maguila, world heavyweight champion, just to mention a few examples.
The last great idol of national boxing was Acelino “Popó” Freitas. Four-time world champion Popó had unforgettable moments and made Brazil stop to watch his fights for the championship belt. However, since his retirement, the sport has lost space in the media and the competitive cartels have taken a back seat, especially with the growth of other modalities.
After a huge hiatus, boxing returns to its golden age in Brazil. In recent months, propelled by major events, boxing has gained traction in the media. Recently, Popó Freitas and Whinderson Nunes participated in an exhibition sport event during the Fight Music Show. More than a duel between two boxers, the mega event brought together personalities, sponsors, drew the attention of major brands and made the whole country watch the fight that ended in a draw and distributed R$12 million.
Held in Balneário Camboriú, the fight between the former professional boxer and the digital influencer stirred up social media. Popó gained 1.4 million followers after the fight, leaping from 500,000 to 1.9 million.
The Fight Show featured an international production, a show by Wesley Safadão and other parallel fights, including MMA world champions, such as Rogério Minotauro, and fighter Esquiva Falcão, silver medalist at the 2012 Olympic Games.
