Male Contraceptive Patch: Myth?

We unravel the controversy: is there really a male contraceptive patch? What does the science say and what the real options are.

In recent days, news about a supposed contraceptive patch by soccer player Neymar went viral on social media and in the media. The promise was tempting: an easy and discreet way for men to take control of their contraception, without the side effects of female methods. But is this new product real?

The short and straightforward answer is: no, the male contraceptive patch is not yet a reality.

Despite all the excitement generated by the news, it is important to clarify that, at the moment, there is no medication approved for use as a male contraceptive in patch form. The only transdermal (skin-based) hormonal-active option available to men is testosterone replacement therapy gel, used to treat testosterone deficiency, also known as androgen deficiency.

"Testosterone replacement therapy is intended to treat a deficiency of this hormone, or androgen deficiency. There is no such medication [contraceptive patch]. For men, the only medication available for transdermal use with hormonal action is testosterone replacement therapy in gel form, but it is not intended for contraception," says urologist Eduardo Pimentel, a full member of the Brazilian Society of Urology.

Why the confusion?

The confusion may have arisen from studies and research being conducted to find more effective and convenient male contraceptive methods. There are, indeed, several initiatives underway, including studies on injectable, oral, and even transdermal hormonal contraceptives. However, none of these methods are available for commercial use at this time.

What is being researched?

Research into male contraception focuses on different approaches, such as:

Hormonal contraceptives: Like the female pill, these methods use hormones to stop sperm production. Research has involved combining testosterone with other hormones, administered through injections, implants or gels.

Non-hormonal contraceptives: This approach seeks to block sperm production or function without affecting male hormone levels. Research involves developing drugs that target specific proteins involved in spermatogenesis.

Reversible vasectomy: This technique aims to create a vasectomy method that can be easily reversed, allowing men to regain fertility whenever they wish.

Why does it take so long?

The development of new male contraceptive methods is a complex and time-consuming process. Rigorous studies are required to assess the efficacy, safety and side effects of different methods. In addition, approval from regulatory agencies, such as Anvisa in Brazil and the FDA in the United States, must be obtained before a new product can be marketed.

What are the current male contraceptive options?

camisinha

Currently, male contraceptive options are limited to condoms and vasectomy. Condoms are an effective method for preventing unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), but they must be used correctly during all sexual intercourse. Vasectomy is a surgical method that prevents sperm from passing through and is considered a permanent option.

The Future of Male Contraception

Despite the lack of a male contraceptive patch on the market, the future of male contraception is promising. Research is advancing and we may soon have new contraceptive options for men that are effective, safe and convenient.

It is important to follow the news and stay informed about scientific advances in this area. And, above all, it is essential to be responsible and careful when choosing a contraceptive method, seeking medical advice and reliable information.

In the meantime, remember: information is the best way to avoid fake news and make informed decisions about your sexual health

Ótimo assunto para ser abordado Bella. Essa polêmica do Neymar tinha me feito acreditar na existência desse adesivo contraceptivo masculino, é uma pena que não seja verdade.
