The Wine Cellar Survival Guide

Forget the fuss. With these tips, you'll choose a wine with the same confidence you have when grilling.

ADEGA

Let's be honest: have you ever felt like a complete novice standing in front of that wall of wines at the supermarket? Labels in Italian, names in French, bottles of all shapes... It makes you want to grab your usual beer and run.
Calm down, warrior. Choosing a good wine doesn't have to be a big deal or a show of fuss. It's like everything else in the life of a Root Man: a matter of knowing the basics, having confidence, and getting straight to the point.

This is your survival guide. After reading this, you'll walk into any wine cellar with your head held high.

The Fantastic Four: 4 grapes you need to know about

Forget the hundreds of grapes out there. Focus on these four. They're like a basic toolbox: they solve 90% of your problems.

  1. MALBEC: The King of barbecue
MALBEC

Where does it come from? Mainly from Argentina.

What's the catch? It's a robust wine with dark fruit flavors and a smooth mouthfeel. Think of it as your friendly friend.

When to use it? It's the ideal partner for rump steak, ribs, or any red meat. You can't go wrong. If there's barbecue on the horizon, Malbec is your best friend.

  1. CABERNET SAUVIGNON: The wild card that never fails

CABERNET

Where do they come from? All over the world, but Chilean ones are guaranteed to be a good deal.

What's the catch? It's the most famous wine in the world for a reason. It's structured, serious, with more "tannin" (that dryness that leaves your mouth feeling sticky and begging for food).

When to use it? Always. Business dinner? Bring a Cabernet. Meeting the in-laws? Cabernet. Home alone with a nice pasta bolognese? You know.

  1. SAUVIGNON BLANC: The liquid air conditioner

BLANC

Where does it come from? Chile and New Zealand are very good.

What's the deal? This is your trusty white. It's light, super refreshing, with a scent reminiscent of cut grass and passion fruit.

When to use it? Hot days, pool, fish, chicken, salad, or to whet your appetite. And yes, Raiz Man drinks white wine. He drinks what's good, period.

  1. CARMÉNÈRE: The Chilean surprise

CAMANERE

Where does it come from? It's the symbolic grape of Chile.

What's the deal? It's a brilliant compromise. More velvety than Cabernet, with a touch of spice. It's a wine with personality, but it doesn't clash with food.

When to use it? Great with pork, pasta with lighter sauces, and even on pizza night. It's the perfect choice to show off your tricks.

How to Read a Label in 10 Seconds (Without Glasses)

No need to decipher hieroglyphics. Look for two pieces of information:

THE NAME OF THE GRAPE: Is it one of the four you just learned? Great.

THE COUNTRY: Is it one of the ones we mentioned (Argentina, Chile)? Even better.

That's it. For now, ignore the rest (the winery name, the vintage year, the medal you won in 1998). The basics work. We'll go into more detail next time!

No more choosing wine based on the most appealing bottle or the highest price. From now on, you no longer choose based on appearance, but on character.
