Andorra

andorra
Between Spain and France, an ancient enclave filled with natural beauty. Andorra is one of the smallest countries in Europe (468 km²), and without reaching 80.000 inhabitants, it receives about 8 million visitors every year.

Even though it is a well-known destination for the European, for those who come from other continents it is a huge mystery, and for those who are willing to kill their curiosity, a destination they won´t be able to forget. Mountains, pure nature, medieval mysticism, cultural mixes... a small world in an amazing place. Due to its geographical position, with over 60 2.500-meters-high mountains, it offers options for all tastes: snow in winter, and warmth during the summer.

For those who like skiing, it is one of the best places in Europe. Its installations and infrastructure are great, and able to meet the expectations of the most demanding tourists. When it is warm, it offers several possibilities for the visitors who love radical sports. There is no doubt Andorra´s biggest source of income is tourism, and that the country knows how to satisfy all of its visitors.

The most inhabited spots are: Andorra la Vella, with a population of 24.678 people; followed by Escaldes-Engordany with 16.714; Encamp with 14.234; San Julián de Loria with 9.651; La Massana with 9.635; Canillo with 5.625; and Ordino with about 4.000. In these places it is easy to find places to stay, but the hint I would give you is to look for their cottages and small rural houses away from the cities.

Catalan is the mother-tongue, but most of the country´s inhabitants speak Spanish and French, and the communication in English and Portuguese is easy. The official currency is the Euro, and the country is accessed through France and Spain, by train, buses or flights.

As well as the sports activities, Andorra offers good shopping options. Clothes, technological items, accessories and perfumes are cheap and of good quality. Among the different commercial  areas we can highlight Meritxell Avenue, in Andorra la Vella. The evenings there are formed by heartwarming parties and restaurants that offer a mix of French and Spanish cuisines.

If you love good food, please try the plates of the Bordas (typical restaurants in mountain houses, built with stones and wood). The escudella (stew of various meats and vegetables) and the trinxat (with cabbage and bacon) are two of the most traditional dishes, and can be served with cava or champagne (sparkling wine varieties from France and the Cataluña).

Tours through ancient streets, under clear starry nights, a few inches from the moon. A journey through the past, an unexpected adventure, perhaps an unpredictable destination.
