Seven best trips to take by car

Brazil has more than 1.8 million highways and only 100,000 km are paved in good condition. But still, our country is enchanting with its fantastic roads and unforgettable scenery. If you enjoy traveling by car (whether for the freedom to stop wherever you want, practicality or adventure), we have selected some “road trip” itineraries to explore our lands on your next break.
1 - Serra Rio do Rastro - Santa Catarina
Located in Lauro Müller, Santa Catarina, Serra do Rio do Rastro is known for its 284 sharp and sumptuous curves. There are 35 kms of asphalt, 1400 meters above sea level, which connects with Bom Jardim da Serra. Among several climbs, mountains, cliffs, lookouts, waterfalls and canyons along the SC-438 highway - if you are passionate about nature and a lot of adventure, this will be an impressive route.
2 - Estrada Graciosa- Paraná
Known as one of the most beautiful roads (estrada) in Brazil, the 40 km along the PR-410 are worthy of unforgettable records. Crossing the Serra do Mar, the stretch passes through part of the Atlantic Forest, in addition to train rides, waterfalls, the Jesuit path, with emphasis on the Portal da Graciosa - a breathtaking historical construction.
3 - South coast of Bahia
One of the most beautiful, the BA-001 road connects different routes on the south coast of Bahia. It's 800 km from Salvador to the extreme south, so we'll suggest a route from the capital to Trancoso: rent a car in Salvador and take the ferry boat to Itaparica, heading to Itacaré on the BA-001. In the second part of the route, it's time to leave for Ilhéus on the BA-001 in a 75 km stretch, known as Costa do Cacau. For the third stage, head to Porto Seguro on the BR-101, until you return to BA-001, 35 km along the road that connects to Trancoso. There you can return the car and catch a flight back home.
4 - Transpantaneira or Rota do Pantanal
To get to know the Pantanal region, our suggestion is to travel the Transpantaneira - ideal to go by 4x4. The dirt road has 145 km of dirt road that separates the cities from Poconé to Porto Jofre, in Mato Grosso. With 120 wooden bridges over swamps, along the way you will immerse yourself in the biodiversity with herons, alligators, capybaras, birds and even anacondas. It is interesting to include in the route the crystalline rivers of Nobres (be sure to visit the enchanted aquarium) and the caves of Chapada dos Guimarães, which stands out for its easy access and infrastructure.
5 - Rota do Sol - Rio Grande do Norte
There are approximately 53 km of road along the RN-063 that go from Praia de Ponta Negra, south of Natal, to Praia de Pipa, passing through all the beaches in the south of the state. As the route is short, you can cover it in one day, depending on your planning. Take the opportunity to fall in love with Praia de Pirangi, home to the largest cashew tree in the world, Praia de Tabatinga and other diverse sceneries worthy of a movie. Pay attention to the signs and we also recommend traveling in a 4x4.
6 - Estrada Real - Minas and Rio de Janeiro
With a total of 1,600 km, Estrada Real is a true journey through the history of our country. Opened in the 17th century, this route passes through inland towns that were part of the Gold Route. You can choose between 4 paths, the main one is called Caminho Velho that leaves Belo Horizonte and goes to Paraty, taking 8 days to be covered with peace of mind.
7 - Rio Santos Road - Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo
Eternalized in the song, “As Curvas da Estrada de Santos” by King Roberto Carlos (one of the most popular Brazilian singers), the road is well known among lovers of a good road trip. Ideal to do during a weekend, there are 250 km that can be covered in 5 hours between waterfalls, islands, bays and rivers. Discover places along the way, such as Praia de Maresias in São Sebastião, Praia do Cedro in Ubatuba, in addition to enjoying the history of Paraty.
