The winter is just around the corner and wine season is tagging along. Nothing better than relaxing with a glass after a hard day's work, special dinner or happy hour. One of the oldest beverages of humankind's history, its tale is fascinating and full of curiosities. Check out the 5 facts about wine and learn more about this nectar of the gods:
1 - Color hints about its origin
The light tones come from places with cold climates, have a lighter taste and less lush. Those with dark tones and yellowish whites come from regions with warmer climates.
2 - 6,000 years in the Middle East
The oldest vines were found in Georgia dating to 7000-5000 BC. It is believed that, at some point, the drink fermented and the yeast came into contact with stored grapes, turning the sugar from the grapes into alcohol.
3 - Wine is not fattening
Unlike beer, the calories from wine are not metabolized in the same way as fats, proteins or carbohydrates. In other words, there is no need to worry about the so dreaded tummy.
4 - Women get drunk more easily
This fact is not due to differences in body structure. The fact is that women have a higher fat content than men which causes the antioxidants to spread less, thus raising the concentration of alcohol in the blood.
5 - The names indicate wide variety
Non-European wines are named after the grape: California Cabernet Sauvignon. European wines generally have the name of their origin - Bordeaux, produced in Bordeaux are made of: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
