Pilates for men
Muscular body, a six-pack tummy, strong arms. This is the main goal of pratically every men who follow a weight lifting program. And if you ask them whether they would exchange their strength training for another activity which offers the same benefits, I am positive most would say NO WAY.
Many guys believe lighter exercises routines are for women, such as treadmill jogging, gym classes with balls and ankle weights, little dumbbells and also the – now much famous – Pilates. That is when we get it wrongly. Men have this fixed idea that we should always be pushing ourselves to the extreme in order to own muscles of steel. That is our biggest mistake! Even because Pilates, for example, might be as heavy and hard as any strength training you have ever tried.
No wonder Pilates is nowadays one of the most praticed exercises worldwide, adopted by many artists, models and sports people who are surely not afraid of showing up their bodies to the media. I mean, c´mon. There´s gotta be something good about the practice. So why not trying it for the first time and seeing how it works for you?
Pilates has first been accepted by women, even though the technique has been originally developed by a man (Joseph Pilates, in Germany), and applied and widespread, in its beginning, to address training requirements for a male audience.
The method increases body´s strength and stretching (working with all the muscle groups), resulting in a balanced development without unwanted overloads, and going against the male tendency of focusing only on some specific muscle groups.
Pilates´ repertoire is vast and varied, causing a major challenge to the male musculature not only to gain strength, but also with the body´s control, flexibility and balance. Its practice leads to deep abdominal muscles, creating an extremely strong and defined core. Surely the right way to six-pack abs!
It´s noteworthy that, for those who don´t like hectic and tumultuous environments like most gyms, Pilates is practiced in air conditioned studios, and classes can be individual or in small groups – made on the floor or with the use of specific apparatus.
Benefits in sports
The practice has widespread ever faster among male athletes. Its benefits are numerous and they range from improved flexibility and balance, to an improvement of aspects such as coordination, strength, speed, agility and concentration. Moreover, a large number of athletes from various sports have realized the effectiveness of Pilates for everything - injury prevention, recovery and strengthening of the whole body.
Every sport has its own distinct patterns of movements, and each type uses specific muscles, while virtually ignoring others. That is where risks arise from muscle imbalance, leaving the body prone to injury. This happens in tennis, sports that involve unilateral movements, as well as in high impact sports - such as rugby - which require high level of fitness and a good range of motion, strength and endurance around certain joints.
Another example of a sport where the Pilates method is being worked on is football. Many players seek activity to improve effectiveness in the field and reduce the risk of injuries related to a weakened core. With constant practice, the abdominal muscles become more strengthened and lengthened, thus improving control, flexibility and balance of the body.
Due to these aspects, the amount of people adept to Pilates has been constantly increasing worldwide. Among the benefits of its practice we can also cite:
* Development of a strong and flexible body, always requiring maximum control of muscles
* Increasing in the breathing capacity
* Improvement of blood circulation
* Development of strong abdominal muscles (core)
* Improvement of the quality of life and sports performance
* Injury prevention and elimination of pain
* Recovery of some muscle problems caused by overload
* Better perception of body and mind
* Reduction of stress
* Better postural alignment
* Improvement of body awareness and motor coordination
Pilates and sex life
Another important benefit provided by Pilates is improved sexual practice. If you practice it for some time, you´ll also feel quite a difference when it comes to better controlling the pelvic muscles, which provides increased sexual pleasure. Stronger pelvic muscles mean more intense orgasms and much longer intercourses - which makes sex time more active, long and pleasurable.
Not to mention the flexibility that many positions require! After some time practicing Pilates, you are certainly going to hold those positions from the Kama Sutra. Piece of cake!
Now let laziness and the remote aside, get off the couch and get moving! For all that I mentioned above, you can see Pilates is here to help us. A balanced diet, aerobic activity at least three times a week and Pilates are the perfect combination for a healthier you!
