The days still have 24 hours
And, when we realize, it is Christmas already! That is how we feel when we stop and think about how quick the year went by. Okay, life is more agitated nowadays. We can barely stand still for a sec, doing nothing at all. Am I wrong?
There are days carried with so many tasks, so many compromises and meetings and stress, during which we keep praying for a day-off, with nothing to do, so we can just lay down in the park and relax. Park? But parks don´t have wi-fi! Right... some of us actually try to disconnect sometimes. Most of us hardly manage it, though. We were used to spend hours contemplating nature, reading a book, riding a bike, dating. Nowadays, when we walk into a coffee shop or a restaurant, the first thing we do is check the mobile phone to see if the wi-fi is on.
The funniest thing is that it has become part of our day. Can you remember how people used to find each other back in the day? I mean ´find´ literally. When you left home, you would probably let mom know where you´d be in case someone called after you. How many times you were in a friend´s house, the phone rang, and suddenly someone would come up and tell you the call was for you? Many! How many moments we lost, because no one was able to find us! If we were not at home, who would be able to find us? How many compromises were put off, and you only knew after you arrived in the place?
We don´t miss things anymore. When the phone rings (IF it rings, since we now have Whatsapp, Facebook Talk, and text messages) to inform you the doctor´s appointment was canceled, you change the plans right away: you go back to work, go for a walk, call that babe in order to meet her. If you girlfriend goes out with her friends instead of staying home with you, you quickly contact your pals in that Whatsapp group, and suddenly you´re at the pub.
I believe it´s because of the velocity of things that life seems to go faster nowadays. The breaks we used to have for doing nothing barely exist now. The urge you feel for checking Facebook or Instagram is constant, and you are able to do it while brushing your teeth, stuck in traffic, or waiting for your turn in the dentist.
I have always worked with the Internet, I use my smartphone for everything you can imagine, and I am always connected. My husband was against it. He surrendered to chaos a few months ago, and now we are just as every other couple on the planet: we are in bed together or on the couch, each of us in our own phones, checking what is new. We discuss much less, and we share some of the things we see, laughing together and talking about some of the subjects that arise.
