Clothes and gender

clothes-and-gender
Talking about gender is mentioning a subject about which people talk all the time lately, some heatedly discuss it, sometimes overreacting. Gender freedom has been more and more accepted - and also criticized. After all, this freedom crosses some limits that some people don’t have or refuse to accept. Or better yet, cannot accept due to cultural factors.

Talking about it is a delicate matter. I deal with it well. I have always been around both heterossexual and homossexual men, and I’ve never forged any kind of false acceptance. I believe respect and equality must always come first.

I see men tend to worry too much when picking their clothes in order for them to be in accordance to their gender. Just a reminder here before we move on: gender is different from a person’s sex: gender is what you identify with psychologically, your sex is your physical body, your physiology, your anatomy (male or female).

When I go shopping with my husband, I see that he worries quite a lot about picking items of clothing that won’t characterize him as gay. Of course not all men act like that. Some simply don’t care. They like fashion, current trends, they buy the newest and trendiest items, no matter what. They don’t worry about what people are going to think.

I admire these men. I guess we should all act like they do, they are original, they are free, they follow their personal tastes and desires. It’s a pity when we realize that some people don’t wear something they like just because other people may be judgemental. Silly!

Usually, when I’m writing the Fashion article for this website, I think about bringing trends and clothes in accordance to Bella Club’s audience. And maybe many men believe that the male fashion doesn’t deserve that much space. A pair of trousers, a shirt and trainers would suffice. Well, I wouldn’t say so. Male fashion matters, it always has.

Fashion has been working with this gender freedom for a long time. Maybe it always has. In case you still don’t know, French kings from the Middle Age loved fashion and extravagant clothing. They wore make-up, wigs, and heels. It was considered normal back then. No one talked about gender.

Nowadays, depending on the pieces of clothing a man wears, he’s judged right there and then, even in his own home. In the 20th Century, men started to think it’s wrong looking after their appearance, that they shouldn’t take care of themselves too much. Where’s the truth in that?

Dressing well has always been cool. Fresh, clean clothes, good-quality shoes… What was lost after the 1950s?

Guys, don’t ever stop dressing the way you like. Especially if you’ve good taste for fashion! Dress up, wear perfume, watch your looks. Think about it: women love men who look after themselves, who look good, who are presentable. It’s too macho to think only women should follow the rules. Believe me, it’s all about having attitude. Wake up for that!
